A day on Dartmoor. Thurs 6th May 2021.

Another cold day in the scheme of things for early May. We've been having some great clear and sunny days but with a bitterly cold North or north westerly wind and often hard frosts.

All of this combines to make all the insect life very late and many of the migrants are struggling to find enough to eat, especially as they are eager to start egg laying.

Our first stop was to Challacombe Farm where there were cuckoos calling from several directions. We also saw redstarts and a singing Garden Warbler. Also had Blackcap & Treecreeper with a Marsh Tit in a stone wall the same place as when we were last there 2 years ago.

We then moved across the moor toward Bovey Tracy to visit Yarner Wood. You now need to park at Trendlebere Downs as they have stopped you parking at the lower bit of the woods.

Fortunately there was Tree Pipit displaying next to where we parked and just across the road was a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker nest. This was at the top of a very high tree, probably about 50 feet so the birds weren't at all concerned with us looking up at them.

My pics are only record shots due to the distance and awful angle but it was still good to see these birds that are such a rarity here in Cornwall.

We watched a Mistle Thrush at its nest and another carrying food, Redstarts were active but the Pied Flycatchers were really quiet and I only managed a few "grab" shots.

I've added a pic of a nice male bird from a previous visit to Yarner.

We need some warm weather!

It was a good day in good company and also really nice to meet some people I've not seen for quite some time!

Pied Flycatchers at Yarner Wood, Dartmoor. 29th May 2019.

Male Pied Flycatcher

Our annual sojourn to Yarner Wood on Dartmoor for the Pied Flycatchers is always a sign that spring has sprung and summer will fast slip away from us!

Several pairs feeding young in the hundreds of nest boxes scattered about the wood.

No sign however of Lesser Spotted Woodpecker or Wood Warblers.

Heard Redstarts and watched Great Spotted Woodpeckers feeding their young.

A few birds from over the border in Devon today.... Friday 12th May 2017

Male Bullfinch

We had a day out today up to Yarner Wood on the eastern edge of Dartmoor.

Caught up on a few more species for my #my200Birdyear !

The Pied Flycatchers were nesting so quite quiet and we heard a few Wood Warblers but didn't get close with the camera.

Found the Male Redstart back at Challacombe and the Stock Dove at Dunsford.

Dartmoor birds

Male Stonechat

A great day on Dartmoor yesterday with Iain Stewart & Adrian "Dibs" Davey.

We saw some good birds and the scenery was fantastic!

Here are a few, although the male Redstart still eludes me, but a good reason to go back again soon!

Pied Flycatchers

Male Pied Flycatcher

I took advantage of the fine weather and took a trip up to Yarner Wood on Dartmoor today to try to find Pied Flycatchers and Wood Warblers.

I was happy after finding several pairs of Pied Fly's merrily feeding away and carrying food to and fro to their nestboxes.

They took virtually no notice of me although I did come with copious amounts of camo material and scrim to break up my otherwise attractive outline!

There were 3 pairs nesting along on bit of path in almost every other box. Those without Pied Fly's had great and blue tits in residence and I also found a nesting pair of Coal tits but they were in a natural nest hole in a stump of hazel.

As for the Wood Warblers they were vocal and it was great to hear but they were high up in the canopy and I couldn't get the camera on them.

All in all a successful day!

Pied Flycatchers

Female Pied Flycatcher

A few more images from our trip to Finland recently.

Pied Flycatchers were one of the commonest nesting birds we saw in the eastern border area with pairs in many of the available nesting boxes we found.

Here are some shots of both the male and the female although the male often passed food to the female away from the nest and she delivered to the nestlings.
